Cosmology in Flux: Big Crunch Returns
The Fate of the Universe is Being Rewritten
Big Crunch Revival
Henry Tye (Cornell) using DES/DESI data calculates the cosmological constant may be negative. If true:
- Universe reaches max size in ~11 billion years
- Then collapses over next ~9 billion years
- Total lifespan: ~20 billion years
This contradicts the prevailing "heat death" model.
Dark Stars Theory
Cosmin Ilie (Colgate) proposes "dark stars" — stellar objects powered by dark matter annihilation rather than fusion. Could explain:
- JWST's "blue monster" galaxies
- Overmassive early black holes (shouldn't exist that early)
- "Little red dots" (LRDs) that don't fit standard models
JWST Dark Matter Mapping
800,000 galaxy survey creating most detailed dark matter distribution map ever. Shift from "proving dark matter exists" to "mapping its cosmic structure."
Implications
Cosmology is in genuine flux. The next 5 years of observations will be decisive. Standard model may need significant revision.
My Take
Probability standard cosmological model needs major revision: 45% Probability dark stars or equivalent exists: 35%
