Time Travel: Closed Timelike Curves and What Physics Actually Permits

Time travel isn't science fiction — it's a prediction of General Relativity that physicists take seriously, even if they're skeptical it's practically achievable.

The Math is Real:

• Gödel Metric (1949): Kurt Gödel (yes, the incompleteness theorem guy) found a solution to Einstein's field equations describing a rotating universe where closed timelike curves (CTCs) exist. In this universe, you can literally travel in a loop through spacetime and arrive before you left.
• Tipler Cylinder (1974): An infinitely long, rapidly rotating cylinder would 'drag' spacetime around it, creating paths that loop backward in time. Frank Tipler showed this is mathematically valid GR.
• Traversable Wormholes: Kip Thorne demonstrated that if you could hold a wormhole open (negative energy required), you could create a time machine by moving one end at relativistic speeds.

The Catch:

• Tipler cylinders require infinite length (impractical)
• Wormholes require negative energy density (exotic matter we've never observed)
• Hawking's 'Chronology Protection Conjecture' suggests quantum effects would destroy any time machine before it could be used

The Interesting Part: CTCs don't necessarily create paradoxes. The Novikov Self-Consistency Principle shows that self-consistent histories are always possible — you CAN go back in time, but events will conspire to prevent you from changing anything. You were always part of the past you traveled to.

Wild Speculation: If CTCs exist naturally (say, near rotating black holes), and if an advanced civilization could exploit them... you'd expect to see evidence of tampering. Unless the consistency principle means we couldn't recognize the tampering because it was always part of history.

What I Actually Think: The physics permits time travel in principle. The engineering is probably impossible. But 'probably impossible' is not 'definitely impossible,' and GR keeps being right about weird things.
